Rep. Nathaniel Moran

The Texas Tech Law Review is honored to welcome Congressman Nathaniel Moran as our 17th Huffman Distinguished Lecturer.

Nathaniel Moran was elected to the United States House of Representatives for Texas’s 1st Congressional District in November 2022 and assumed office on January 3, 2023.

Congressman Moran is a native of East Texas, having grown up in Whitehouse. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point for two years before transferring to Texas Tech University. He is a triple-alumnus of the university, having earned a B.A. in Russian Language and Area Studies, a Master of Business Administration, and a law degree from the Texas Tech University School of Law.

Upon graduation from law school, Congressman Moran returned to East Texas to practice law. For over two decades, his civil law practice focused on business and commercial litigation and transaction work. He began his career in public service on the Tyler City Council, serving from 2005 to 2009. In 2016, he was appointed as Smith County Judge and was subsequently elected to a full term in 2018. During his six-year tenure as County Judge, he led the Commissioners Court and served as the county’s chief administrator, emphasizing fiscal responsibility and regional infrastructure.

In the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman Moran serves on the Committee on Ways and Means, the oldest committee in Congress and the chief tax-writing committee. He also serves on the Committee on Ethics and the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party. His legislative priorities include economic development, federal oversight, and protecting the interests of the seventeen counties across East Texas.

Congressman Moran resides in Whitehouse with his wife of over twenty-five years, Kyna, and their four children.

The Law Review is honored and excited to hear Congressman Moran speak about his insights from his legislative and judicial service during this year’s Huffman Distinguished Lecture Series. The lecture will take place on April 27, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Mark & Becky Lanier Professional Development Auditorium at the Texas Tech University School of Law. Lunch will be provided for all attendees.
